Tesla “Front Camera Visibility Limited” or “Camera Blocked or Blinded”: What It Means and How to Fix It
What does “Front camera visibility limited” mean on a Tesla?
Tesla’s manual says the car has detected a layer of hazy residue on the windshield that blocks the camera view, so Self-Driving features may be limited. The car is OK to drive. Check the outside glass for dirt, ice or wiper streaks; if the alert returns on your next drive, schedule service to clean the inside of the windshield camera area. Controls > Service > Maintenance shows whether that cleaning is due.
Two of the Model Y's cameras look out through the top of the windshield, above the rear-view mirror. Most camera alerts come from weather or dirt and clear on their own. One is different: it means a film has built up on the inside of the glass, where you can't reach it. Everything below comes from Tesla's US owner's manual unless noted.
Which alert do you have?

Front camera visibility limited
What it means: The car detected a layer of hazy residue on the windshield in front of the cameras. Self-Driving features may be limited.
What to do: Check the outside of the glass for dirt, ice or wiper streaks. If it shows up again on your next drive with clean glass, book a cleaning of the inside of the windshield camera area.

Camera blocked or blinded
What it means: One or more cameras can’t see well because of dirt, rain, fog, snow, glare, darkness or condensation. Self-Driving features may be paused.
What to do: Usually temporary. Keep driving, and if it hasn’t cleared by the time you arrive, clean the camera surfaces.

Cruise control unavailable: reduced front camera visibility
What it means: A front camera is blocked or blinded by outside conditions, so Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer are off until it can see.
What to do: Usually clears on its own. If not, clean the top-center of the windshield before your next drive.
Every one of these says the car is OK to drive. Self-Driving and cruise features come back once the cameras can see.
Quick checks you can do
- 1. See what the car saw. Controls > Service > Camera Visibility shows a summary of poor visibility during your last drive. The images stay on the car and delete after two days.
- 2. Clean the outside. Spray water on the windshield's top center and each camera lens, then dry with a microfiber cloth. Tesla says to do this weekly in wet weather and monthly in dry weather.
- 3. Use the bumper camera sprayer. On the 2025+ Model Y, the front bumper camera has its own washer: open the Camera app and tap the spray icon.
- 4. Look for wiper streaks. Tesla lists streaks as a cause of the haze alert. Worn blades are a cheap fix.
- 5. Dry out condensation. If cameras fog up after a cold or wet night, precondition the cabin warm, turn on the windshield defroster, and point the front vents at the door pillars.
- 6. Check the maintenance summary. Controls > Service > Maintenance shows whether the inside of the windshield camera area needs cleaning.
Haze on the inside of the windshield

Tesla's manual says the inside of the windshield within the front camera enclosure "must be cleaned periodically" to keep the cameras working well. That glass sits behind the camera housing, so you can't wipe it from the cabin. When the Maintenance summary or the Front camera visibility limited alert says it's due, book it in the Tesla app.
What it costs
Tesla doesn't publish a price. In November 2025, Not a Tesla App reported that Tesla offered it free when the car's own alert added it under Service > Outstanding Work, against a normal $60–$85. Check the estimate before you approve.
Rule out a software false alarm
In September 2026 Tesla acknowledged that FSD v14.3.9 raised false cleaning alerts on clean glass, per Not a Tesla App. If the alert appeared right after an update and the windshield looks clear, ask Tesla before paying.
What not to do
- • Don't pry open the camera housing to wipe the glass yourself. Tesla routes this through service.
- • Don't put a hydrophobic coating on the windshield. Tesla says to use it only on side and rear windows because it can affect the Self-Driving cameras.
- • Don't use windshield treatment fluids, which Tesla says can make the wipers chatter.
- • Don't use chemical-based or abrasive cleaners, or anything sharp, on a camera lens. Water and a microfiber cloth are what Tesla recommends.
- • For the glass, use an automotive glass cleaner and never scrape it.
After a windshield replacement
If the windshield or a camera was replaced, the cameras need to recalibrate. Tesla's manual says to go to Controls > Service > Camera Calibration > Clear Calibration, then drive. Calibration usually finishes in 20–25 miles on a straight, well-marked multi-lane highway. Contact Tesla if it still isn't done after 100 miles.
Windshield damage itself is a separate question: see whether Tesla's windshield protection plan is worth it.
FAQ
What does “Front camera visibility limited” mean on a Tesla?
Tesla’s manual says the car has detected a layer of hazy residue on the windshield that blocks the camera view, so Self-Driving features may be limited. The car is OK to drive. Check the outside glass for dirt, ice or wiper streaks; if the alert returns on your next drive, schedule service to clean the inside of the windshield camera area. Controls > Service > Maintenance shows whether that cleaning is due.
Can I clean the inside of the windshield camera area myself?
Tesla’s manual tells owners to schedule service for it. That glass sits inside the camera enclosure, which you can’t reach from the cabin, so leave it to Tesla rather than prying at the housing.
How much does Tesla charge to clean the windshield camera area?
Tesla doesn’t publish a price. In November 2025 Not a Tesla App reported that Tesla offered the cleaning free when the car’s own alert added it under Service > Outstanding Work, against a normal price of about $60–$85. Check the estimate in the app before you approve the appointment.
Why does my Tesla say camera blocked when it’s cold?
Condensation can form inside the camera enclosures when the car is parked outside in cold or wet weather. Tesla says to precondition the cabin warm, turn on the windshield defroster, and point the front vents toward the door pillars to dry it.
Can a software update cause false camera alerts?
Yes. In September 2026 Tesla acknowledged that FSD v14.3.9 triggered false camera cleaning alerts on clean windshields, according to Not a Tesla App. If an alert appears right after an update and the glass looks clean, ask Tesla before paying for a cleaning.
